How to avoid bad decisions in urgent repair situations

December 28, 2020

It was 4 am when Dan, a pre-press manager in a New York mom-and-pop print shop, realized what mess he’s facing. Last night the Trendsetter’s laser head showed a new error, and he has a 20K order to supply by the weekend. Is there any technician in my contacts who could help me solve this, first thing tomorrow morning? He thought desperately. No, the only technicians I know are those who used to fix the pre-press during the warranty, and it expired ten years ago. Since buying a new laser head is something that he couldn’t possibly afford, Dan didn’t see the way out of this.

If you ever found yourself in Dan’s situation, you can understand how desperate you can be while facing this kind of problem. And as we all know, desperation has the danger of leading to the wrong decisions, such as:

1. Buy a spare part in a spare parts marketplace: in these marketplaces, it’s tough to know if a skilled technician checked the parts thoroughly and consequently – if the part is really in good condition. The sellers usually don’t belong to any recognisable association, there is no warranty, and basically- it’s a risky decision.

2. Call an experienced technician you know to help you out: competent technicians will be able to solve your problem quickly and effectively only if they gain years of experience fixing your particular part. It can take hours for a technician who’s never dealt with your laser head to understand the error and fix it, if at all.

3. Buy an expensive new part from the manufacturer: Sometimes, when you don’t have the time to search for a spare part, you’ll decide to buy a new one. This decision might be wrong economically because there are much cheaper and better alternatives – if you know where to look for them.

To sum up, you’ll have to know an established service supplier that can give you professional emergency services for your spare parts, so you can sleep peacefully at night, knowing that you are in good hands. Because when you have the right service supplier in your contacts list – no malfunction will ever stop you from delivering your order by the deadline
